I got a chance to check out a very large Tulip Poplar. The customer believed it is a historic tree. Honestly we get calls every week about HUGE trees. Most of the time they are large but infact not that large. A couple of months ago we removed the second largest Oak in Winchester, VA. It was in severe decline and had become dangerous. This Poplar turned out to be a giant. I called the local forrester and he is going to come check it out. He will report it to be scored and hopefully it will be the largest recorded Poplar in Virginia. The way trees are scored is circumfference+height+crown=score. A long time ago we came across the largest recorded Hackberry in WV. it had some minor issues but overall was healthy. Mature trees do not always take well to any kind of pruning. If there is no immediate danger, often times, it is best to just let the tree be and do what it would naturally. I will get pics of this Poplar and update shortly with the results. Pretty exciting. Check out this website to find record trees in VA. Also, to report large trees to be recorded. https://bigtree.cnre.vt.edu/index.html

Land Clearing and Logging Project. We started this on a Thursday and wrapped it up the following Tuesday. A lot of moving parts on this one. We had a logger come in to haul and sell the logs for the customer. We contracted Adam Durbin with Hop Skip and A Stump to grind the stumps. To finish, we graded the whole area and had gravel delivered to rebuild the driveway. Between logs, wood chips and the scrap wood we hauled 13 loads out totaling well over 100 tons. The scrap wood went to a more local miller named Kyle Drake. He will mill what he can and in return bring some of the finished wood back to the customer. The rest he will use to heat his kiln. The wood chips went to multiple locations. They will be used for natural mulch and to fill in muddy areas on local farms.

Often times climbing tree can be meditative for me. When you get to the top it is hard to hear anything but the wind. You feel this odd sense of solitude and calmness. You get a different perspective and rare views. It always brings me joy knowing that I might be the only person that gets to experince that exact view. Pictures do not do it justice and cannot begin to describe the feeling. It is a great pleasure to get to enjoy what we do so much!

If I had to guess, these Red Oaks were declining from soil compaction. They were in an area that is used as a driveway and over the years the soil has gotten very hard. This hinders the trees ability to properly get resources. A few years ago we got a lot of rain. This rain gave Anthracnose an oppertunity to run rampant. With the trees not taking in resources properly, it made it harder to combat the Anthracnose. The trees slowly started to show signs of decline and eventually started to shed large limbs and cause damage to the house. these trees quickly became candidates for removal. We did find o local mill in Berryville, VA that came and got the wood. At least these majestic Oaks will not go to complete waste.

Well of coarse Old Town Tree and Landscaping, Located in Winchester, Virginia, had to get a new chipper to pair with our new bucket truck. Now we have 2 full set ups. We can split up and serve more customers or reduce down time. When equipment goes down or has to be serviced, it does not have to disrupt our schedule. Now if we can just control the weather we could work everyday!

I have said for decades now that bucket trucks are not a necessary part of tree work. They have their place but climbing is the true value in this industry. That being said bucket trucks are way easier than climbing. the real reason we purchased this was to add a level of safety when doing hazardous removals. Here at Old Town Tree and Landscaping, we have always prided ourselves on having the best climbers in Winchester, VA. We still have those climbers but now have a new weapon in our fleet. Bucket trucks have their limits but ultimately will increase our . We have also grown a lot and this helps keep our lead time short so we can serve as many customers as quickly as posible.

The best time to prune any tree is always the winter. Bugs and beetles aren't active to invade fresh cuts. Bettles are the number one way diseases and fugus are spread to trees. Trees have an abundance of energy stored to help seal fresh cuts. Also it is considered the slow time of year for tree work. Often times this leads to better prices. Removals can be done anytime of year. Winter rates apply to removals as well! So all in all winter is low key best time to get tree work done. Call Old Town Tree and Landscaping today and ask about our special winter deals. (540)336-5415.

A lot of homeowners do not know their risks when hiring any contractor. Advertising INSURED does not always mean that homeowners are completly covered. Sadly a lot of this is on the homeowner to figure out. Another sad reality is that sometimes companies do not carry the proper insurance. It is always best to ask for current documnets of proof of insurance. An insurer can issue a certificate with a customers information on it. This is the best way to verify proof of insurance. Also in Virginia businesses are only required to carry workers comp if they have 2 or more employees. If the company does not have workers comp it does not nessecarily mean they are bad or breaking the law. A lot of companies only carry general liability insurnace. Again this is not bad. It just does not fully protect the home owner. I personally have hired smaller companies that I trust and know that did not require workers comp. At the end of the day it is about comfort and trust. I gauge the risk level of the type of job I am hiring a professional for. At Old Town Tree we do carry workers comp insurance.
